Parisians are mad for Italian food, which explains the abundance of pasta parlours in Paris. Unfortunately, most of them aren’t very good. Not far from L’Etoile, Samesa is a brilliant new exception to this rule. Originally from Abruzzo, chef Claudio Sammarone is a passionate chef who was once employed by the Countess de Ribe and who has a vast knowledge of regional Italian cooking, and after making his Left Bank address Le Perron a popular table with Saint-Germain-des-Prés publishers, he’s opened this cheerful dining room with red walls and widely spaced tables. Standouts from Sammarone’s menu include artichokes à la Judea (crisply fried), sautéed baby squid, octopus carpaccio, and terrific pastas like magliafati with delicious fennel sausage sauce. Service is charming, and an excellent wine list offers well-priced bottles from all over.
